The formula that works for me is this: God speaks in 7 different ways; and when I have to make decision, at least 4 of them need to align.
When I started applying that, my decision-making have been easier, and I never had any regrets about of the choices I made since then.

Pastor Paul Tripp shared his struggles: There are only two places to look. I will either get my identity vertically, from who I am in Christ, or I will shop for it horizontally in the situations, experiences, and relationships of my daily life. This is true of everyone, but I am convinced that pastors are particularly tempted to seek their identity horizontally.
Let’s talk about the characteristics of Unhealthy, Abusive and Cultic Church in detail. Which category does your Church fall into?
Church environments fall along a continuum. On the one extreme would be the absolutely perfect environment… such a perfect environment could only exist in theory. On the other extreme would be an abusive, exploitative, dishonest, utterly destructive group with no redeeming values whatsoever.
Between these two extremes, there is every other church environment.

All the things I detest in the Church and the attitudes I hate about some of these people, are also found in me far too often than anyone else.
